Importance of Recognition

"People may take a job for more money, but they often leave it for more recognition." Bob Nelson, author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees,

"What three things do you want most in a job?" The most frequent answers to this question are; a good salary, job security, and recognition for a job well done.

Recognition is important because it sends a powerful message that the recipient is important. It says the organization they belong to cares about good performance. With the implementation of effective award and recognition programs can create a positive working environment that encourages employees to thrive. Recognition makes employees feel valued and appreciated, it contributes to higher employee morale, increases organizational productivity, and can aid in recruitment and retention. Recognition is a powerful motivator. It serves to reinforce the enthusiasm, commitment, and social conscience and is a great vehicle for conveying the mission and goals of the corporation or organization.

Industrial psychologist Abraham Maslow researched human motivation extensively and determined 50 years ago that "needs" drive motivation. From our most basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, safety and security, to our more sophisticated needs of ego satisfaction and self actualization, we are driven to fulfill these needs. We will usually undergo some internal tension, such as hunger when we need to eat, until the need is satisfied. This tension stimulates or motivates us constantly until the need is met.

The need for recognition (one of our more sophisticated needs) is determined to be one of the most difficult to achieve or satisfy. It is the only "need" of which humans are entirely dependent upon others to respond. In other words, recognition by definition must come from someone other than you.

"What about recognition through a monetary award?"

Recognition through a monetary award can only be important ways of letting workers know their worth to the company; it tends not to be a sustaining motivational force to most individuals. In other words, salary raises and bonuses are nice, but they seldom motivate people to do their best on the job on an ongoing basis. Daily excitement for people's work is influenced more by how they are treated in the workplace-that is, by the softer side of management more than by what they are paid. Money also has limitations as a motivator because in most organizations performance reviews and corresponding raises occur typically once a year. To inspire employees, managers must recognize achievements and progress toward goals much more frequently than once a year.

In fact, recognizing and rewarding performance should take place on a daily basis. One of the most meaningful methods of recognition is to simply say "Thank You". This simple and sincere manner can go a long way toward building motivation & commitment, plus it is a very inexpensive technique too.
